British woman found stabbed to death on India houseboat

A 24-year-old female British traveller has been stabbed to death on a houseboat in India.

Sarah Groves, from Guernsey, was found dead inside the boat this morning on the Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir.

Police have said a 43-year-old Dutch man, Richard de Wit, was arrested about 45 miles from the scene of the suspected murder.

Abdul Ghani Mir, the Inspector General of Kashmir, told NDTV in India: 'The Dutch national had fled from the houseboat in the night, leaving behind his belongings.

'He was trying to flee from the valley, carrying only his passport. We flashed an alert for his arrest.'

Police said the woman was found in a pool of blood.

Tributes have been paid to the 24-year-old by well-wishers on sites including Twitter.

Sarah le Marchant tweeted a picture of Sarah along with the tribute: 'Trule pure innocent beautiful girl. Can't believe how evil some people are RIP Sarah Groves xxxx'.

Olivia Judge tweeted: 'Thoughts are with the family of Sarah Groves, the world can be such an awful place'.
