Nelson Mandela Reportedly in “Permanent Vegetative State”

Nelson Mandela was in a “permanent vegetative state” and his family was advised by doctors to switch off his life-support machine, according to a court document published on Thursday.

According to court documents obtained by the AFP news agency, doctors treating the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician, advised his family to turn off his life support machine a week ago.

The court filling dated Wednesday 26th June 2013 read “He is in a permanent vegetative state and is assisted in breathing by a life support machine.”

Aljazeera reports that Mac Maharaj, a spokesman for President Jacob Zuma of South Africa declined to comment on the documents.

“The Mandela family have been advised by the medical practitioners that his life-support machine should be switched off. Rather than prolonging his suffering, the Mandela family is exploring this option as a very real probability.”

The claims came in stark contrast to the words of Mr Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, who spoke publicly for the first time about her 94-year-old husband on Thursday and insisted he was “fine” and not in excessive pain.
