Nigeria's Konga to sue Rocket Internet over domain names

Nigerian online retailer to sue German company Rocket Internet to court over domain name ownership. According to Vanguard report, Rocket Internet is the parent company of Nigerian online retailer, Konga has alleged that Rocket Internet has registered Konga-related domain names in ten different countries where it might like to establish operations, should it decide on expansion outside of Nigeria.

The list of the domain names and the countries where they are registered include: for Cote D'Ivoire, for Cameroun, for Libya, for Mauritius, for Morocco, for Malawi, for Seychelles, for Saint Helena, for Kenya and for South Africa.

Konga's public relations strategist, Ifeanyi Abraham, told Vanguard that Rocket Internet had intentionally registered the domain names in order to effectively ensure that Konga does not come into the orbit of their competition. He said that Konga has exhausted every option to retrieve the names and would engage Rocket Internet in litigation. He noted that Konga would follow all legal procedures and alternatives there are in all the jurisdictions where those domain names have been registered.
