Yaya Toure named the African Player of the Year 2013 by CAF

Manchester City's Yaya Toure has been named the African Player of the Year 2013 by the Confederation of African Football at an awards ceremony held in Lagos on yesterday evening. . He beat the two other contenders John Mikel Obi and his fellow country man Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast.

Mikel whom many Nigerians expected to win considering his performance in the last African Nations Cup which Nigeria won and his brilliant contribution to his team Chelsea wining the Europa Cup last year only ended up as the first runner up.

While Didier Drogba also came in at second runner up. It has been a great night at the awards venue and much fun still.

However, it was the Ivoirian Toure who was called up to the podium again, walking in the footsteps of Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o who won it thrice between 2003 and 2005.

I congratulate Yaya Toure for a deserved award and i hope Mikel makes the list for the next awards and eventually wins it for Nigeria as it has been over  nine years since a Nigerian won the awards. The last Nigerian to win it was Kanu Nwankwo.
