Music Icon David Bowie dies of cancer aged 69

Singer David Bowie, one of the most influential musicians of his era, whose ground-breaking music inspired generations during a career spanning six decades, died on Sunday at the age of 69 after being diagnosed with cancer.

A statement was issued on his social media accounts, saying he "died peacefully, surrounded by his family" after an "18-month battle with cancer".

Tributes have been paid from around the world to the "extraordinary artist" whose last album was released days ago.

Bowie's son Duncan Jones, who is a Bafta-winning film director, wrote on Twitter: "Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Love to all."

David Bowie's wife Iman Abdulmajid posted a moving message on social media on the day of her husband's death.

The 60-year-old supermodel shared an image on Twitter saying, 'The struggle is real, but so is God,' along with the caption 'Rise'.  Another tweet she also posted included the message: 'Sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory.'
