Reports: President Buhari Receives Information on Shakau Whereabouts
This was disclosed in an interview with the Daily Telegraph before the president went on vacation on February 5, Friday.
The last time Shekau’s voice was heard on March 7, when insurgents promised allegiance to the Islamic State in an audio statement. Shekau failed to appear on cameras in the latest videos. This was followed by a set of allegations that he was either in hiding, or had been wounded or murdered. Since then no one has either heard or seen the insurgent number one in Nigeria.
Buhari in interview said: “I receive conflicting information about the status of Shekau. Some say he has been removed and replaced by a less charismatic terrorist leader.
“I think he must be on the run, because out of the 14 local government districts that Boko Haram used to call their caliphate, they now do not control any now. They are scattered around the Sambisa forest and they have resorted to attacking soft targets, people in churches, mosques and market places, and using improvised explosive devices.”
